How to Drape a Tissue Silk Saree – Step-by-Step Guide

The Elegance of Tissue Silk

Tissue silk sarees are among the most coveted in Indian fashion — their gossamer-thin weave catches light beautifully, making them a favourite for weddings, receptions, and festive occasions. But their very lightness can make draping feel tricky. Follow this guide and you'll achieve a flawless, structured drape every time.

What You'll Need

  • Your tissue silk saree (6 to 6.5 metres)
  • A well-fitted, matching or contrast blouse
  • A petticoat in a matching colour (silk or satin works best)
  • Safety pins (at least 4–5)
  • A full-length mirror

Step-by-Step Draping Guide (Nivi Style)

Step 1 – Tuck the Starting End

Hold the plain end of the saree at your navel and tuck it into the petticoat, going all the way around once. Make sure the bottom hem grazes the floor evenly.

Step 2 – Make the Pleats

Create 5–7 neat pleats of equal width (about 5 cm each). Tissue silk is slippery, so use your fingers to press each pleat firmly before tucking. Tuck the pleats slightly to the left of your navel, angling them toward your left hip. Pin them in place.

Step 3 – Wrap Around

Take the remaining fabric and wrap it around your waist once more, keeping the bottom hem level. This second wrap gives the saree its body and prevents it from slipping.

Step 4 – Drape the Pallu

Bring the remaining fabric (the pallu) over your left shoulder. For tissue silk, a slightly longer pallu — about 1 to 1.2 metres — looks most graceful as it flows and catches the light. You can let it hang freely or pin it at the shoulder for a more structured look.

Step 5 – Secure and Adjust

Pin the pallu at the shoulder. Check the hem all around — it should be even and just touching the floor. Adjust the pleats so they fall straight down the front.

Styling Tips for Tissue Silk Sarees

  • Blouse: A sleeveless or short-sleeve blouse in raw silk or brocade complements the sheer fabric without overpowering it.
  • Jewellery: Polki, kundan, or gold temple jewellery pairs beautifully with the metallic sheen of tissue silk.
  • Footwear: Heels (5–7 cm) help the saree drape more elegantly and prevent the hem from dragging.
  • Petticoat colour: Match your petticoat as closely as possible to the saree — tissue silk is semi-sheer and the petticoat colour will show through.
